I’m going to turn this site into a kind of traveler – or expat if you prefer – meets self-improvement aficionado (I wish ), meets Asian cuisine lover, meets internet marketing type of web log. So in other words – its about living the internet marketing dream the way it should, or could be lived! Will be a ton of fun so I hope you can join me! In fact, I will indeed encourage guest posts – the more the merrier!
I’ll be spending more time on this blog than on any of my others, simply because I can indulge my true passions all in one!
Just to kick things off, briefly. Wow – I gotta say that yesterday I had one of the most delicious bowls of laksa I’ve ever had! And one of the cheapest to boot – 3 ringgit, which is about 65 pence in UK money (with current exchange rates) or that’s about 1 US dollar. As top Michelin Chef Bobby Chinn said – “in South East Asia, the less you spend on eating out, the better the taste of the cuisine”.
Ah geez, I could not agree more! Hawker centers win the day here in Kuching, hands down! And one of the best around is my girlfriend’s sister’s place which is called Sing Garden! More about Sing!

Well, getting back to the bowl of laksa… The bean sprouts were crunchy and fresh – as always they are here in Kuching! The noodles were perfectly cooked – al dente, as the Italians would say – not too hard and not too soft, the prawns were superb – colours were vibrant pink and white and they were succulent and quite perfect, actually. However, it was the sauce – the sauce was a gorgeous tangy spicy stunningly flavoursome piece of work indeed!
I used to believe that a beautiful curry sauce (filled with hot chilli) was the be-all and end-all of food lovers life. Its met its match in the wonderfully spicy laksa sauce! My taste buds melt at the merest thought of it and I come over all giddy !
Okay, yesterday I also spent a fair bit of time watching Travel and Living channel on television in Yiing’s (my Chinese Malaysian girlfriend) parents house, which here in Malaysia is all about – or rather, much about various folks traveling around Asia. Its not all about Asia – its about Europe, America, Africa, Australasia – you name it, and I gotta say its my favourite television and its become almost a compulsion!
One of the programmes that caught my eye the most was the Michelin Chef Bobby Chinn’s. Is he full of fun or what? He’s always making fun of other people, but in a non-aggressive way.
Yesterday’s programme was firstly about Bali. And yes, he spent some time with the gentleman who is
the owner of the hotel that myself and my girlfriend – Yiing, had the privilege to stay at about 3 months previously. Heinz is his name – he is Swiss, and he fell in love with Bali and the Balinese people’s and cuisine about 30 years ago or more!
Actually, he also owns two superb restaurants in Bali – he’s a trained chef, after all, and has written a number of books about the subject matter of Balinese cuisine. You can find details of the restaurants here…
Very highly recommend indeed if you want to taste and sense authentic Balinese cooking and life, all together. Wonderful!
Anyhow, you could sense his sheer passion in his interview with Chef Bobby Chinn!
The other part of Asia that Bobby Chinn spent time at was Penang, which is an island off western Malaysia, the second smallest state of Malaysia, but is the 8th most populoused – not so far from where I am now located, which is the south east island of Malaysia – in Sarawak. And here is another stat for all your geographers – Sarawak makes up a whopping 37.5% of the Malaysian landmass!
He spent time cooking up a Penang-style laksa, which is fish-based. I personally would not like that, as I find most fish to be too strongly flavoured for my palate. Nevertheless, it looked simply stunning, even though the lady who normally cooks it was looking on in amazement, and in puzzlement
just to add in here – Chef Bobby Chinn is on television right now with Chef Wan, of Kuala Lumpur – another top world-renowned chef. I have to presume that Chef Wan is gay, and I suspect Bobby Chinn is somewhat speachless, for once (I think Bobby Chinn must have a massive IQ (is that a measure of true intelligentsia??) – he is incredibly smart!). After all, they are cooking together on camera…).
Errrmm, sorry, another quote going on here… “Chinese people will eat anything with legs, apart from tables“.

Now the other programme that really caught my attention was Janet Hsieh travels Taiwan. Janet has recently been a guest at my girlfriend’s hotel – Basaga, here in Kuching (the link is to my own travel website and provides a review of Basaga hotel).
Well, that girl – Janet Hsieh, is so full of energy that it rocks me (or maybe that should be “shakes me”)!
She’s just started out on this particular series so I shall be watching out for it in the coming weeks, and learning a lot more about Taiwan!
